HURRICANE – Seven touchdown passes from junior quarterback Ismael Borrero, two interception returns for scores and a safety enabled unbeaten and third-ranked Hurricane to win a wild 60-36 decision against visiting Parkersburg here Friday night.

The Redskins, who had not played a game in three weeks due to the COVID restrictions, came back from a 29-28 halftime deficit behind the arm of Borrero, who completed 20 of 26 passes for 276 yards while Lucas Rippetoe scored four times, three of them on receptions and one on a late pick-six.

Parkersburg got four first half touchdown runs from quarterback Bryson Singer, who gained 241 yards in the first 24 minutes but ran into a Hurricane second half defense that adjusted to stopping the Big Red junior and held him to just 33 more yards.

Hurricane also got three TD receptions from Chase Hager, who caught nine passes for 119 yards in all, and senior Tyrone Washington ran for 110 yards on 17 carries.

Borrero had his second pass of the game intercepted by Carter King on the PHS four yard line but that turned quickly into a disaster as Singer was tackled in the end zone by J.T. James for a safety with the game just one minute old.

The Redskins then drove 46 yards after the ensuing free kick and Borrero found Hager from 25 yards out to make it 8-0.

The Big Reds retaliated quickly as Singer broke loose for a 57 yard run on the first play from scrimmage and Xadrian Snodgrass followed with a 13 yard gain to the four. Singer went up the middle for the touchdown and then passed to Jordan Martin for the two-point conversion to tie the score with 6:45 left in the first period.

Borrero hit Rippetoe with a 26 yard TD toss with 3:59 on the clock to make it 15-8 after the extra point kick and the home team got the ball back 43 seconds later after a Singer fumble was picked up by the Redskins on the PHS 44. Three plays later Borrero hit Hager from 21 yards out for another score to make it 22-8.

Singer’s 58 yard scamper on the next Big Red possession set up his own one yard run on the first play of the second quarter and Casey Stanley’s PAT made it 22-15.

An intentional grounding penalty forced by Justin Waybright’s pressure forced a Hurricane punt and PHS was able to tie the game with a 22 yard touchdown run and Stanley kick.

Hurricane regained the lead when Borrero passed to Rippetoe on a fourth-and-six play from the 18 yard line. The kick failed but with 1:22 left in the half the home team was up 28-22.

Three plays later Singer gave PHS the lead on a scintillating 77 yard TD run as he went back to pass, took off, cut back and outran two defenders who appeared to have the angle to make a play. That score came with 19 seconds remaining and Stanley’s kick put the visitors up by one at the break, 29-28.

A Hurricane punt that was downed on the PHS one yard line gave the Redskins the break they needed to take the lead for good in the third quarter as Singer tried to throw from his own end zone and was picked off for the touchdown return by Brogan Brown.

James made it 41-29 with his three-yard TD reception with 2:27 on the clock but the Big Reds were able to cut the lead to five with an 11-play, 73-yard drive that culminated with Xadrian Snodgrass’ one yard run with 10:52 left in the game. Singer accounted for 32 yards on the drive, including six on a fourth-and-four play from the Redskin 36. Stanley’s kick made the score 41-36.

Hurricane wasn’t through as the ‘Skins scored on their next two possessions to make it 54-36 with Borrero throwing 18 yards to Rippetoe and 28 yards to Hager with 2:06 remaining. The final score came with Rippetoe intercepted freshman David Parsons’ pass and returned it 22 yards to the end zone with 1:49 left in the game.

The game ended with Parsons completing five straight passes for 59 yards before throwing an incompletion.
